Baltimore Orioles starter Jason Hammel will undergo an MRI Friday after being placed on the disabled list Wednesday for a right flexor mass strain, according to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.
Hammel was sent to the 15-day disabled list upon the Orioles' acquisition of Bud Norris at the non-waiver trade deadline Wednesday. Hammel had not let on that he had been injured — he didn't show any physical signs of pain like Pittsburgh Pirates closer Jason Grilli did when he suffered the same injury recently — but he has not pitched well recently. He's allowed 12 runs and 26 hits in his last 17-1/3 innings, striking out eight and issuing 11 walks in that span.
Hammel has made 21 starts for the Orioles this season and thrown 123 innings. His 5.20 ERA is fifth-worst in all of baseball among qualified starters, and his 1.51 WHIP is seventh-worst among qualified starters.
Norris will take his place in the Orioles rotation.
