Hall of Fame Game 2013: Cowboys take down Dolphins, 24-20, to open preseason

It may not have been the most thrilling night of football in Canton, Ohio, but it was football, nonetheless. The Dallas Cowboys knocked off the Miami Dolphins, 24-20, in Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game to officially kick off the 2013 NFL preseason.

Cowboy's running back Phillip Tanner racked up 59 yards and a touchdown on the ground and linebacker DeVonte Holloman took an interception back 75 yards for a pick-six as Dallas won a battle of the backups. Rookie running back Joseph Randle, a fifth-round pick last April, was also impressive piling up 70 yards on 13 carries.

Jonas Gray was the Dolphins' leading man on the ground with 41 yards on seven carries. Chad Bumphis, a rookie receiver out of Mississippi State, added 85 receiving yards.

Both teams significantly limited the play of their starters, with several of the biggest names, including Dolphins wideout Mike Wallace and Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo, sitting out the game altogether. Wallace, the Dolphins' big offseason acquisition, is battling a groin injury, while Romo is still recovering from a surgery to remove a cyst in his back.

Kyle Orton earned the start in Romo's place, going 2-for-3 for 25 yards in minimal action. Alex Tanney threw for 58 yards, while Nick Stephens added 24.

Ryan Tannehill got the nod at quarterback for the Dolphins, but got off to a rough start when he fumbled the team's opening offensive snap. He finished 2-for-5 for only 11 yards. Backup Matt Moore was solid with 238 yards and a touchdown, but threw the interception that Holloway returned for a score in second quarter.
