New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez returned to the field Monday night, going 1-for-4 in his first game back in the MLB after undergoing a pair of hip surgeries.

Rodriguez hit a bloop single in his first at-bat despite the swirling steroid-suspension controversy and large amounts of boos. He failed to reach base again, however, flying out twice before striking out in his final at-bat.

The Yankees lost the game by a score of 8-1 while falling to 58-54 on the season. The team is bringing Rodriguez back despite the bad PR because third base has been a black hole for them in 2013. If they fall out of contention, though, it will be interesting to see how the team handles the situation.

Rodriguez is the only player to appeal his suspension relating to the Biogenesis scandal and the Yankees will have that cloud over them for a while until the appeal is resolved. The mercurial third baseman also made some controversial remarks before Monday's game by saying that he was "fighting for his life."
