Preseason football begins for the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants Saturday night. The teams will meet at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field to begin the long march toward Super Bowl XLVIII.
The Steelers have grown accustom to competing for titles over the years, but they're coming off a disappointing 8-8 season and a postseason on the golf course. Though the starters won't see much action -- head coach Mike Tomlin says they'll play 10-12 snaps -- Saturday's game will give those hoping to earn a bigger role in 2013 a chance to prove their value. Behind the Steel Curtain, SB Nation's Steelers blog, has a list of seven players who need to step up against New York.
The Giants would love to get back to the mountaintop in 2013, and if they do, New York will play for a Super Bowl title on its home field. The Giants' starters will stay in the game for roughly a quarter, and the most interesting development could be the performances of quarterbacks David Carr and Ryan Nassib. As Big Blue View, SB Nation's Giants blog, points out, Carr is playing mentor to Nassib as the two compete for the backup QB job.
