UNLV Runnin Rebels sophomore Savon Goodman is suspended for the entirety of next season, Taylor Bern with the Las Vegas Sun reported.
Goodman was charged on August 15 with burglary, grand larceny and conspiracy to commit burglary, the first two of which are felonies. The charges stem from an incident on May 18 when Goodman allegedly stole shoes, video games and cash worth over $1,000.
Rebels coach Dave Rice told the Las Vegas Sun that even though Goodman hasn't been convicted of anything, he will be taking time off to straighten the situation out.
"I will not have any specific comment until we know more. Having said that, regardless of the resolution, at the very least Savon Goodman will not play this season so he can focus on getting his priorities in order."
Although he has been suspended from the team, Goodman isn't suspended from the school. Rice told the Las Vegas Sun he expects Goodman to continue with classes at UNLV, which began today.
"I want to help and support Savon through the process but that doesn't mean that basketball has to be a part of the equation to do that," Rice said. "From a team standpoint there's nothing more important than competing for championships, but on an individual basis sometimes there are things that need to be addressed that are more important than playing basketball."
Goodman averaged 3.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in nine minutes a game for UNLV last year, but was expected to take on a larger role with the team after playing well in the Desert Reign ProCity League. He scored 37 points during the league's preseason game and 28 points in the second week of the league.
His spot on the roster will most likely be filled by either incoming freshmen Christian Wood or Jamal Aytes, who committed to the Rebels on Aug. 19.
