Mark Sanchez will not be ready for the New York Jets' season opener, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday evening. Sanchez suffered a deep shoulder bruise in a win against the New York Giants last weekend, and has yet throw in practice since. The injury puts rookie Geno Smith on track to start the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite his erratic play throughout the preseason.
E.J. Manuel throwing again
Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel threw passes in warmups prior to Thursday night's game against the Detroit Lions. He didn't move much on his surgically repaired knee, but the development was a good sign that Manuel is progressing well from the procedure. His status for Week 1 against the New England Patriots remains to be seen. As of now, undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel is still expected to start under center for Buffalo.
Philip Rivers says he needs to eliminate bad plays
In a story with the Los Angeles Times, Philip Rivers admitted that his play last season contributed significantly to the San Diego Chargers' 7-9 record. In fact, Rivers' turnover numbers have increased every year since 2009. Over that span, the Chargers have gotten progressively worse, from 9-7, to 8-8, to 7-9. A new coaching staff and a new offensive system could help, but according to Rivers he simply needs to be smarter.
Jason Hill works out for Bears
With Brandon Marshall struggling through hip issues, the Chicago Bears may be looking to add some veteran help. Jason Hill worked out with the team earlier this week. The 28-year-old has never caught more than 30 passes in a season, but he could provide some useful depth given the youth behind Earl Bennett and Alshon Jeffery. Joe Anderson, Brittan Golden, Josh Lenz, Terrence Toliver, Eric Weems and Marquess Wilson have a combined 26 career receptions among them.
Nnamdi Asomugha wins 49ers 3rd CB spot
It's not the position we expected Nnamdi Asomugha to be in when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011, but regardless, he is set to play a relatively big role with the San Francisco 49ers this season. Asomugha was once considered the preeminent shutdown cornerback in the NFL when he signed with Philadelphia, and then promptly struggled. He'll be the Niners' nickel back this season, playing behind Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown.
