The Cleveland Browns will start Brian Hoyer at the quarterback position on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced on Wednesday. Hoyer gets the nod over presumed No. 2 Jason Campbell.
Starter Brandon Weeden was given a vote of confidence recently, despite having led the Browns to an 0-2 start. Unfortunately, Weeden has suffered an injury to his throwing hand -- a sprained thumb. Campbell came in to relieve Weeden in the team's Week 2 game against the Baltimore Ravens and didn't find success, but it wasn't exactly the easiest situation to step into.
For instance, Campbell entered the game with the Browns down, and started his first drive from the 1-yard line.
Still, at this point it seems most likely that the Browns consider Campbell a known commodity, given that he's had multiple opportunities at starting throughout his career. Hoyer, however, has only had one start for the Arizona Cardinals, and the Browns would rather take the chance that he might have something to offer while Weeden is out.
Fantasy Impact: The Browns are not a winning team, and Weeden was never a strong fantasy quarterback option to begin with. He's their starter, but it wouldn't be the most shocking thing in the world if Hoyer had a strong game or two and the team elected to roll with him. If you're absolutely hurting for anything remotely resembling a starting quarterback, then pursue Hoyer. Otherwise, stick with what you've got, fantasy owners.
