Alex Semin has sustained his second concussion in the last calendar year.
Carolina Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin has sustained a concussion, head coach Kirk Mueller announced after practice on Tuesday afternoon. While Mueller did not specifically say so, it's safe to assume that Semin is out for an indefinite period of time while recovering from the injury.
The Carolina forward received a brutal hit from St. Louis Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo on Saturday night, which many believe is the play that resulted in the injury. At the time, the Hurricanes only acknowledged the injury as having to do with the upper-body.
This unfortunately marks the second such instance of a concussion for Semin, as he was shutdown for the remainder of last season after sustaining a similar injury. The extent of that injury remains unclear as he missed the remaining two games of the season. However, the span of time is within a year, which in a general sense is somewhat concerning.
New York Rangers forward Rick Nash missed 17 games after sustaining his second concussion within a calendar year. Of course, no head injury is alike and comparing the two likely won't yield a similar timetable.
