The Isles took the lead...and then lost.
The New York Islanders just demonstrated how to blow a game with 49 seconds remaining. And it wasn't pretty.
Thomas Vanek gave the Isles a 2-1 lead with under two minutes left in the third period. Then Mike Green went to the box for interference, and the Washington Capitals were shorthanded. All but over, right?
Wrong. New York found itself chasing in its own end and Nicklas Backstrom tied the game with 49 seconds left.
Unsurprisingly, the Isles didn't convert on the power play and the game went to overtime. Alex Ovechkin sealed the Isles' disastrous collapse with the game-winner two minutes and change into the extra frame. Washington skated away with a 3-2 win.
Go home, Islanders.
