Phillips will make a decision between Case Keenum and Matt Schaub for the Texans' season finale.

Backup quarterback T.J. Yates won't start for the Houston Texans in the season finale after all. After opening the door on the possibility of the third-year signal caller starting against the Tennessee Titans, interim head coach Wade Phillips shut it closed on Tuesday, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Philips declined to name a starter between Case Keenum and Matt Schaub.

"Both of the other guys have played a whole lot, and going into the last game, they give us the best opportunity," Phillips said. "It just would be hard for T.J. to come in after not playing any the whole year."

With Keenum suffering from ligament damage in his thumb, Schaub made his first start in nine weeks in a loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 16. Schaub began the year as the starter but was relieved in Week 7 after struggling with interception problems. The move hasn't helped Houston, who have gone 0-8 since moving to Keenum.

Phillips said he'll wait until later in the week to make a decision between the two.

"I think Thursday, when we start throwing the ball around and see how Case is, and see how he is on Friday after throwing the ball a lot on Thursday, we'll get a better idea."

Yates has thrown for 113 yards, no touchdowns and two picks in three appearances this season.
