The Titans let Munchak go after he failed to make the playoffs in three years as head coach.

Tennessee Titans general manager Ruston Webster released a statement on his decision to fire head coach Mike Munchak. Webster stated that the team decided to go in a new direction a week after the season ended, and "tough choices" were made.

The Titans met with Munchak on Friday and reportedly said he could stay on as coach if he made significant changes to the coaching staff. Munchak balked at the offer and was let go, but Webster will stay on as general manager.

Webster's complete statement, via the Titans' official website:

"First I want to thank Mike Munchak for his professionalism through this process and thank him for his years of dedication to the Titans/Oilers organization. He is first-class and I wish him and his family nothing but the best. I also want to praise Tommy Smith for his involvement during the weeklong process. He was thorough and thoughtful.

The last week has been a difficult time trying to navigate through many issues to find the best resolution for this franchise moving forward. Tough choices were presented to all sides and the end result was to part ways and move forward without Mike.

We will immediately begin a search for a new head coach.

I am confident that we will find a coach that can continue our growth as a team and lead us to sustained success."

Munchak's assistant coaches are also expected to be let go, although a decision has not been made on them yet.Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean believes that the Titans are interested in Seahawks coordinators Darrell Bevell, Dan Quinn and Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia. All three have ties to Webster, but they are being courted by several other teams.
