You can't miss Brian Daboll out at Kansas City Chiefs training camp. He's been wearing yellow Chiefs shirts (which are actually pretty cool) as well as a bucket hat so he kinda stands out. The other guys wearing the yellow are quarterbacks and, no offense to Daboll, but you're not gonna mistake him for a 6'4" quarterback.
The Chiefs new offensive coordinator spoke to reporters on Tuesday and I've plucked a few of the quotes. I think the truest statement in everything he said is this one: "That's something that we want to pride ourselves on is trying to be able to run the ball when you need to run the ball."
Make the jump for the Chiefs OC on the quarterbacks, running backs and offensive line. He also touched on the year two leap from Jon Baldwin, who had a "monster" practice on Monday.
On the quarterbacks:
"Well, they're working at it. I've been pleased with them in the spring and I've been pleased with them out here this summer. All four guys did better in the classroom as well, they have good camaraderie, they go out there and compete with each other, to try to get better."
On the running backs:
"When you have training camp, you see them break some runs and the defense does some good things too, and you kind of give and take back and forth. That's something that we want to pride ourselves on is trying to be able to run the ball when you need to run the ball. It takes everybody to do that, not just the running backs, the line, the quarterback getting stuff set right, the tight ends, the receivers, a collective effort. We're just trying to keep getting better at it."
On the offensive line:
"They are five guys that are gelling, I think it's a good eclectic balance. Steve Smith and the two coaches I work with that are in there with them early. They are a group that is pretty close, they do some things together, you see them over there bonding on the sideline, talking together. At the end of the day when you call plays you have to play cohesive football with all the other guys, but these guys set the tempo, so they have to be on the same page in football, so the more they work together, the better it will be."
On Jon Baldwin:
"Jon has been doing a good job. I think Nick Sirianni is doing a really good job with all the wideouts. They're taking to their coaching. I think that from a year one to a year two sometimes with any player historically that I've been around, you kind of make a little bit of a jump, and we're hoping to see that progress from Jon."
