By the time Stuttgart's 29th minute goal was scored, they had created multiple other chances to go ahead and had been the much better side. Timo Werner missed a sitter in the eighth minute and the hosts were denied a penalty shot shortly afterwards, with the referee missing a handball by Rafinha in the box. Eventually, they would capitalize on one of their chances, with Vedad Ibesevic poking in a pass from Mohammed Abdellaoue. There was a hint of offside, but the assistant referee thought otherwise.
Bayern's attack continued to look stale until the hour mark, when Claudio Pizzarro was introduced into the game. He leveled the match in the 76th minute, heading in a free kick by Thiago. The visitors picked up the pace after that, but needed all of the remaining time to find a winner. Thiago was the hero, scoring in spectacular fashion with a brilliant scissor kick off a cross by Rafinha.
