The Chiefs have parted ways with one of their highest-paid players in the secondary.
The Kansas City Chiefs have released cornerback Dunta Robinson just one year into a three-year contract he signed in March of 2013. The Chiefs are expected to save $3 million in cap space for the 2014 season by cutting Robinson, according to the Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor.
The Falcons cut Robinson, 31, last season three years into his six-year, $54 million contract with the team. The final two years of Robinson's contract with the Chiefs would have carried cap hits of $5.3 million and $5.7 million.
The Chiefs benched Robinson in the middle of the 2013 season when the cornerback began to underperform. He started his career in Houston before Atlanta signed him to a big-money contract, but he's never been able to re-capture the success he had early in his career with the Texans.
The list of 2014 NFL free agents at cornerback is one that features a few star players. Robinson isn't likely to get a big contract on the open market and may have to settle for a one-year, prove-it contract. Aqib Talib, Vontae Davis and Sam Shields are the guys who will be fetching big money, and Robinson could be a more inexpensive option for teams.
