New Mexico won its third straight Mountain West Tournament, with Kendall Williams icing the game with a deep three.
New Mexico upset regular-season champion San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference Tournament final, 64-58. In the third defensive slog between these teams this season, the Lobos were able to grind out a few more baskets than the Aztecs.
Cameron Bairstow led the way for New Mexico, finishing with 17 points and nine boards. Kendall Williams finished with 16 points, including an absolute dagger from downtown that gave the Lobos the cushion they needed to hold on.
Leading scorer Xavier Thames put up 15 for San Diego State, but hit just six of his 16 field goal attempts. Skylar Spencer added six points to his team-high 10 rebounds.
The tournament win was New Mexico's third straight in the Mountain West. The last non-Lobo team to win the MWC Tournament was San Diego State in 2011.
San Diego State finished the regular season as champs, one game in front of second-place New Mexico. Both teams were assured bids to the Big Dance before this one tipped, but the result of this game will certainly be reflected in seeding. The Aztecs and Lobos split the regular-season series.
