The craziest game of the season had what might have been the craziest ending.
If the Detroit Red Wings end up sneaking into the playoffs this season, their 5-4 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins will be the game you can point to.
Daniel Alfredsson's buzzer-beating overtime goal gave the Red Wings two huge points in the standings and capped off an outrageous 65 minutes of hockey that featured a little bit of everything.
But let's start with the goal.

That is Alfredsson's second of the game, and it ended up bouncing in off of Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi after a Chris Kunitz turnover at the other end of the ice bounced over Evgeni Malkin and started the Red Wings on a 3-on-1 rush.

But that was only part of the madness in this game.
How crazy was it, and how fortunate were the Red Wings to get out of this game with two points?
Just consider that three -- not one, not two, but three -- of their goals were own goals by the Penguins, including the overtime winner that bounced in off Scuderi, the second time in the game he was victimized by such a bounce.
The Penguins scored more goals on their own goalie in this game than the Red Wings did.
If that wasn't enough, Detroit had to kill off a five-minute major penalty late in the third period that carried over to the overtime period after David Legwand was ejected for hitting Malkin in a rather sensitive area with the butt end of his stick well behind the play.

And that doesn't even get into the fact that Detroit is still using an injury-depleted roster that has left the Wings without several of their top players, including forwards Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.
And somehow, through it all, they managed to squeeze out two points.
With 75 points the Red Wings are just one point behind Columbus for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, pending the outcome of Washington's game in Los Angeles later on Thursday.
