It was an up-and-down day at Quail Hollow on Friday. Some notable players played well, like Justin Rose, while others like Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy limped in.
Following strong first rounds, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy looked like they'd be contenders to win the Wells Fargo Championship. Those aspirations took major hits on Friday with McIlory barely making the cut while Mickelson is seven strokes off the lead. Martin Flores and Angel Cabrera will head to the weekend on top with both sitting at 9-under.
There is a reason Quail Hollow Club is one of the top courses on the PGA Tour. While red numbers can be had, the course can bite back quickly and severely. McIlroy found out the hard way, carding two double bogeys and two bogeys during his first six holes. He rebounded some, making the turn in 40 and playing the back nine at even to finish with a 4-over round of 76. The poor round was enough to drop him from a tie for seventh and three strokes off the lead to a tie for 59th and 10 strokes off the lead. McIlroy barely made the weekend, finishing one stroke ahead of the 2-over cut line.
Mickelson didn't have the double bogey issues McIlroy did, but he didn't fare much better, shooting a 75. He finished the day with six bogeys. While he didn't play especially well in the first round, he still managed to shoot a 67 thanks to some excellent putting. He didn't have the same success on the greens in the second round, leading to the 75.
"I can't believe the difference in putting from yesterday to today," Mickelson said, via Golf Channel. "Yesterday, I saw every ball go in the hole, and today I couldn't get 'em to fall, and was three-putting, which is funny because the greens today were so perfect."
While Mickelson and McIlroy tumbled down the leaderboard, Brendon de Jonge did the exact opposite. A day after shooting an 80, de Jonge, carded eight birdies and an eagle to shoot a 10-under 62. He went from tied for last to tied for 30th. The 62 is even more impressive when you consider no one else in the field shot better than a 66 and only six others shot 67 or better. Quite the difference a day can make:
Cabrera wasn't able to match the 66 he shot in the first round, but finished with a 3-under 69, good enough to tie Flores for the lead. They will open the weekend one stroke ahead of Justin Rose who sits in third at 8-under. Rose shot a 5-under 67, including an eagle at No. 15.
Lee Westwood won't be around for the weekend after he finished at 3-over and missed the cut. He shot a 76 in the second round, including three double bogeys. Westwood missed the cut despite carding eight birdies and an eagle in 36 holes.
