It took until the 93rd minute, but a goal finally came, and Portugal beat Mexico.
Portugal went to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., without Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul Meireles and Pepe and still came away with a 1-0 win over Mexico thanks to a stoppage time goal by Bruno Alves.
The match looked destined for a draw, but a foul gave Portugal a set piece chance in the 93rd minute. Joao Moutinho stepped to the free kick and hit a beauty, and after Alves beat Maza Rodriguez to get free, he met Moutinho's ball with a perfect header right into the corner for the winner.
Mexico now head to Brazil having lost consecutive matches and with plenty of questions. Miguel Herrera's squad are far from their best and have no more friendlies to sort things out with their World Cup opener just one week away.
The first half saw Mexico keep the ball, but do little with it. They struggled to create chances and spent most of their time on it passing it around without any real purpose. A long distance shot by Andres Guardado that Eduardo comfortably watched roll wide was their best chance.
Portugal did much more despite having the ball once, with Eder creating problems and twice having chances at headers, but both went wide. Portugal were able to test Jesus Corona twice, but the Mexican goalkeeper was up to the task both times.
Mexico were much better in the second half, finding holes in the Portugal defense and putting Eduardo to the test, or at least making him worry. Guardado had one fantastic chance, but it went inches wide, while Eduardo was called upon on a few occasions to make excellent saves. Miguel Layun was also fouled right at the edge of the box and could have had a penalty. The referee ruled that he was out of the box and awarded a free kick, while Mexico argued he was in the box and replays were unclear, it was so close.
With Mexico on the front foot, Portugal had to bring men back and didn't do much going forward. They broke on the counter once and drew a foul, but nothing came of it and Memo Ochoa, who came on at halftime for Corona, was never really challenged.
Mexico's best chance came two minutes from time when Alan Pulido was played in on goal by Javier Hernandez, but Pulido's first touch was just a bit heavy. That little mistake was all Eduardo needed to come fly off his line and make a great save on Pulido.
Eduardo's save earned Portugal one last chance at a winner, and in the 93rd minute, Moutinho and Alves made good on it. The ball found the back of the net, and Portugal had a win, even without three of their stars.
