One minute in. Nice overhand right by Rhodes. Low kick by Biggie. Glancing left hook from Whittaker. Rhodes with a right hand as they exit the clinch. Two minutes in. Lefts by Whittaker, who narrowly avoids a counter right. Low kick from Whittaker, short uppercut inside. Nice counter overhand by Whittaker. He avoids two long punches. Two minutes to go. Both connect with low kicks, Rhodes follows his up with a spinning back kick. Whittaker right hand forces Rhodes to retreat. Rhodes connects with a low kick. Takedown attempt does not succeed but he gets Whittaker to the cage. One minute to go. Whittaker turns, cracks him with a knee to the body, and exits the clinch. Front kick narrowly misses, Rhodes axe kick likewise falls short. Whittaker connects with another right hand. High kicks blocked. Whittaker with one more low kick before the bell. 10-9 Whittaker.
Round two: Knee by Rhodes, Whittaker with a pair of long punches. Rhodes high kick is too much so. Whittaker also misses, but lands a good left hook. Rhodes shoots in and briefly gets Whittaker down against the cage. Whittaker back up quickly, but still pressed against the cage. One minute in. Whittaker lands a short elbow and exits. Rhodes lands a low kick and they briefly swing heavily. Good jab by Whittaker. Two minutes in. 3-2 by Biggie, long right by Whittaker, check hook by Rhodes in a nice sequence. Whittaker backing Rhodes up, but not landing as cleanly as he did in the first round. Nice right hand. Two minutes to go. Body kick by Whittaker, Rhodes head kick blocked. Whittaker whiffs on a series of heavy punches. High kick blocked. Rhodes lands a counter straight and an inside low kick. Uppercut from Whittaker. One minute to go. Counter uppercut connects for the Ultimate Fighter winner. Overhand right by Whittaker after some Rhodes low kicks. Rhodes still targeting the leg but not turning the kicks over. Whittaker blocks a high kick near the bell. 10-9 Whittaker, but closer.
Round three: Good exchange in center cage. Rhodes narrowly misses with a high kick, but eats a good left. Both fighters moving their heads well to stay out of trouble. Check hook by Whittaker and some right hands connect. One minute in. Rhodes cross counter. Body kick connects. Whittaker combo blocked. Double jab pops Rhodes' head back, Rhodes comes back with a heavy straight. Whittaker's jab is working quite well. Rhodes lands a lead straight and avoids an elbow. Right straight, left uppercut for the American. Two minutes in. Whittaker looking for the right elbow. Whittaker shoots in with a powerful double leg and puts Rhodes on his back. Whittaker in half guard. Two minutes to go. Whittaker with the occasional left hand, Rhodes sneaking in some elbows of his own. Rhodes turns into him with the underhook, can't budge him. Whittaker yanks his arm free of a Kimura attempt. Rhodes turning into him but not showing urgency to stand. Whittaker flattens him back down and drops elbows. One minute to go. Rhodes looking for deep half, Whittaker biffing him sporadically. Ref stands them up with twelve seconds left. Rhodes tries a tornado kick in desperation but does not connect. Should be a win for the hometown hero. 10-9 Whittaker.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT 43 PLAY-BY-PLAY RESULTS (FIGHT PASS "PRELIMS" UNDER CARD):
155 lbs.: Dashon Johnson vs. Jake Matthews
Round one: Matthews presses Johnson against the fence early on with double underhooks. Shoulder strikes and a knee from Matthews. One minute in. Johnson denies a single-leg, then jumps for a guillotine after almost giving up his back. Matthews gets out of it and starts dropping heavy ground-and-pound. Two minutes in. Johnson trying to control posture, but still taking shots. Hard elbows by Matthews. Two minutes to go. More powerful elbows and Johnson's opened up. Matthews moves into side control; Johnson just holding on. Matthews drops punches from north-south. One minute to go. More good shots. Matthews tries to step over for an arm, Johnson turns into him for a takedown attempt. Matthews denies it and drops punches on Johnson until the end of the round. 10-9 Matthews.
Round two: Matthews aggressive early on. Johnson whiffs on a corkscrew uppercut, then narrowly misses a traditional uppercut as Matthews shoots. Matthews has him against the cage again; Johnson drops some 12-6 elbows directly to the back of the head and the referee takes a point. One minute in. Matthews lands a head kick. Matthews misses a long right hand but presses Johnson into the fence. Matthews has a bodylock. He gets in on Johnson's hips, Johnson stays on his feet. Two minutes in. Johnson blatantly grabs the fence as Matthews tries to drag him down. Matthews tries a single-leg, Johnson flips him over. Matthews goes right back to the cage. Two minutes to go. Matthews lands some short knees and shoulder strike. One minute left. Johnson denies a trip attempt. Body shot by Matthews. He's in on Johnson's hips and gets him down against the cage. Right to side control. Matthews takes mount as time expires. 10-8 Matthews with the point deduction.
Round three: Matthews moving forward, eats an uppercut and right hook. Johnson whiffs on an overhand. Good right hand by Matthews. Knee to the dome; Johnson is ducking in as he steps in and Matthews uses it to grab a guillotine and roll Johnson into mount. Matthews dropping powerful elbows and punches. High mount now. Johnson gives up his back after a prolonged beating. Two minutes in. Matthews focusing on punches instead of hunting exclusively for the choke. Two minutes to go and Johnson rolls him over. Matthews immediately locks up a triangle and Johnson taps out quickly Excellent debut for the young Australian.

125 lbs.: Roldan Sangcha-an vs. Richie Vaculik
Round one: Hard low kick by Roldan; Vas tries to shoot in off of it but Roldan counters with a takedown of his own. After a couple tries, Vas makes it to his feet. He teases a guillotine, then gets in on his legs and slams Roldan to the mat. One minute in. Vas has one hook in after Roldan gave up his back trying to stand. Good knee to the body. Vas tries to fall back, but Roldan uses it to reverse position. An ill-advised guillotine from Roldan allows Richie to take him down into half guard. Two minutes in. Roldan regains guard, denies a couple attempts to pass. Short right hands by the Aussie; Roldan sweeps right into mount and takes Richie's back. Two minutes to go. Roldan is overly aggressive and Vaculik rolls him into bottom half guard. Richie trying to pass. Roldan gives up his back attempting to stand and Vas gets a hook in. Now both in with a minute to go. Richie locks up the choke quickly; Roldan grimacing but manages to avoid the choke twice. Richie locks up the body triangle, tries a neck crank, and ends the round without getting the choke. 10-9 Vaculik.
Round two: Roldan lands a head kick right off the bat. Richie shoots in quickly; Roldan grabs a power guillotine but surrenders guard and loses the choke. One minute in. Roldan controlling posture and avoind ground-and-pound. Richie takes half guard. Back to full. Two minutes in. Short elbow by Vas. Not nearly as much grappling action this round; the ref stands them up with a little over two minutes to go. Side kick to the dome from Roldan. Rishie shoots, Roldan gets underhooks and stops it. Vas presses him against the cage and knees the leg; Roldan soon returns the favor. Roldan stops a double-leg and they split. One minute to go. Good leg kicks from Roldan and he stops another takedown attempt. And another. Head kick blocked from Sangcha-an, leg kick lands. Richie shoots off of the next leg kick, can't get it, but ends the round with a good bodylock takedown. 10-9 Vaculik.
Round three: Vas blocks a body kick. Low kicks land for Roldan. One minute in. Body kick connects. Back to the legs now; nothing from Vas so far this round. Roldan flicking out kicks, Vaculik very passive so far. Roldan cracks him with a good left hook. Two minutes in and Richie shoots. He can't complete it, but cracks Roldan with knees and shoots in again. No success, but he does whack Roldan with a left hook as he exits. Two minutes to go Roldan firing off shots, but coming up short. Vas lands a lead right hand. Another one. Rhichie shoots in; Roldan grabs the fence twice but avoids being put on his back. One minute to go. They trade low kicks. Good counter straight by Roldan. Richie tries a takedown but can't complete it at the bell. 10-9 Sangcha-an.
Final result: Vaculik def. Sangcha-an by unanimous decision

170 lbs.: Vik Grujic vs. Chris Indich
Round one: Grujic light on his feet early, avoids a right haymaker. Grujic lands a check hook, Indich moves him to the cage. One minute in. Grujic reverses position, eats a pair of hard knees to the body before they split. Low kick from Grujic. Jab and inside low kick connects. Indich tries to move him to the cage, lands a knee but gets reversed. They split before long. Two minutes in. Indich lands a spinning kick to the leg. Failed takedown attempt by Grujic. He shoots in again, moves Indich to the cage but gets reversed. Grujic's face is bloody. Grujic reverses and tries to get in on his hips. Two minutes to go. Indich keeps his balance on a high crotch attempt, lands some knees and takes Grujic down. Grujic returns to his feet and grabs a front headlock as Indich tries to shoot in again. Grujic drops some punches and slams Indich down into side control. Grujic hops into mount and takes the back quickly. One hook in, now to. Forty seconds to work. Indich manages to make his way out and stand against the cage; Grujic batters him as he rises and crushes him with a right straight as Indich attempts to fire back. Indich falls to his knees and the referee steps in.

170 lbs.: Rodrigo Goiana de Lima vs. Neil Magny
Round one: Leg kick early for Monstro, Magny pops him with a jab. Body kick lands for the Brazilian. Magny catches a low kick and tries to get into Monstro's half guard, but Monstro immediately sweeps him and latches onto his back. Magny gets to his feet, but de Lima is still attached to him. One minute in. Monstro trips him down against the cage into half guard. He's working for mount, Magny defends. Two minutes in, de Lima passes to side control and mount in quick succession. No GnP yet but he's maintaining the position well. Good right hand. Magny shrimping but unable to dislodge Monstro. Nice left hands by the Brazilian. Short elbow connects. Magny finally regains half guard with a minute to go. Magny trying to use the underhook to improve position, gives up mount in the process. de Lima moves into S-mount and locks up a triangle as Magny rolls him over. Magny lifts him up, places him on the cage, and slams him down Hughes-Newton style. de Lima keeps it locked up and it's extremely tight, but he runs out of time. 10-8 de Lima.
Round two: Magny aggressive early, popping him with long jabs and straights. de Lima whiffs on a left hook. Magny connecting well with the right hand. Stiff left forces de Lima to give ground. One minute in. 1-1-2 by Magny, all three connect. Stiff jab and another hard right hand. Magny sharpshooting very well and steering clear of Monstro's occasional retaliatory shots. Two minutes in. Southpaw 2-1 from Neil. Another gorgeous cross and another; Magny backs him into the cage and the third cross crumples the Brazilian. A few punches on the ground and Magny has his first UFC stoppage win. Excellent comeback by Magny.

145 lbs.: Ian Entwistle vs. Daniel Hooker
Round one: Entwistle attempts to dive for a leg immediately, can't get a grip on it. Entwistle advancing aggrassively and shoots in against the cage. Hooker lands a knee to the body. Entwistle attampts a scussor takedown, but lands on the bottom in butterfly guard. He quickly elevates Hooker and goes for a heel hook. Hooker avoids it and leans in, but Entwistle changes to an inside heel hook. Hooker dropping short elbows as Enwistle tries to crank away. Two minutes in. Hard elbows by Hooker, Entwistle unfazed. It's been more than a minute and Entwistle is still trying to crank way. Hooker figure fours his legs and whacks away at Entwistle with punches and elbows. Two minutes to go. Hooker continues pouring on elbows and opens Entwistle up. The barrage continues, forcing Entwistle to abandon the leg and turn away from the shots. Entwistle taking a beating and the ref rightly calls it. Savage debut by Hooker.
Final result: Hooker def. Entwistle by TKO (elbows)

205 lbs.: Sean O'Connell vs. Gian Villante
Round one: O'Connell eats a body kick, but snaps Villante's head back with punches. Villante lands a low kick and clinches up. O'Connell moves him to the cage, attempts a single, but can't complete it and they separate. Nice head kick and uppercut by Villante, O'Connell disregards them and moves him to the cage. One minute in. Trading knees on the inside. Villante soon makes distance. O'Connell lands a right hook after a leg kick. Nice exchange in center cage. Both are swinging wildly, though O'Connell seems to be landing a bit more consistently. Body kick lands for Sean. Halfway through the round, Sean wades in with punches and moves him to the cage. More knees to the knee and body, O'Connell trying to work some dirty boxing. Sean goes for a leg, loses it and Villante separates. Ninety seconds to go. O'Connell continues marching forward winging haymakers and connects on a fair few. Back to the fence, nothing there. Villante flicking out front kicks and a head kick. O'Connell yet again steps in with punches and looks to rough Gian up against the cage. Villante breaks with 30 seconds to go. Hard uppercut by Villante, hook by O'Connell. They jockey in the clinch, O'Connell stopping a takedown and landing a standing elbow at the bell. 10-9 O'Connell.
Round two: Villante looking to jab, O'Connell with low kicks in return. O'Connell jabbing as well. Villanteeats a one-two. Both trading body and leg kicks. Short uppercuts by Villante as Sean leans in. One minute in. Straight from O'Connell and he drops Villante with a left hook. Gian back up quickly and manages to avoid getting takedn down from the rear waistlock. O'Connell advancing, Villante dishing out some damage of his own. Two minutes in. THey move to the fence, O'Connell digging to the body while Villante looks for the plum. Knees by Gian. O'Connell pressing him against the cage, Gian circles free after a short time. Two minutes to go. Villante kicking the body. Once again to the cage, O'Connell doing the smothering. Villante circles free. Nice right-left by O'Connell, Villante cracks him with a right in response. One minute to go. Villante with a good left body kick as O'Connell plods forward. Counter hook by O'Connell. Body shot and overhand right by Villante. Knee by O'Connell, uppercut by Villante at the bell. 10-9 O'Connell.
Round three: O'Connell leg kick strays high right off the bat. Villante takes some time before they get back into it. Right hand lands for Sean. Villante lands an overhand right. O'Connell still on the front foot, stepping in with combinations that Villante is answering with counters. One minute in. Body kick from Villante and a hard sequence of right hands wobbles O'Connell. Sean steadies himself quickly. Villante lands some strong leg and body kicks on the retreat and shrugs off an attempt to work him on the fence. Two minutes in. Villante with a counter overhand and left hook. O'Connell eating more than he's taking. Villante tries to flick out front kicks, settles for a body kick. O'Connell barrels him into the cage. Two minutes to go. Knees to the legs from O'Connell. Gian separates and lands a nice head kick. O'Connell returns him to the fence, can't get anything going there. Lead right by Sean, powerful uppercuts in response by Villante. Head kick glances off. One minute to go. O'Connell shoots in against the cage, can't get it. 1-2 by O'Connell, who moves him again to the fence. They trade body blows inside before separating. O'Connell still aggressive and shoots in.
