A celebration took an ugly turn when a broken champagne bottle cut Brad Keselowski’s hand in Victory Lane at Kentucky.
Brad Keselowski sliced his hand on a broken champagne bottle while celebrating a victory on Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway.
The Team Penske driver cut his right hand between the pinkie and ring finger when the bottle struck the trophy stand in Victory Lane. Keselowski immediately left for the infield care center, where he received four stitches to close the wound.
Following treatment, Keselowski resumed his post-race media obligations. He expects no complications in gripping the steering wheel. The next race is July 5 at Daytona International Speedway.
"We were playing around with some champagne bottles and as I told my good friend, ‘We should have stuck with beer,'" said the Miller Lite sponsored Keselowski. "We were having too much fun with champagne and one of the bottles broke and I cut my hand open. It's no big deal."
Initially, Keselowski tried to play it off that his hand was OK before it quickly became apparent the injury was more severe than originally thought.
"I did the typical guy thing," Keselowski said. "(I'm thinking) it's not that bad, it's not that bad, and I shook it a couple times and there was blood flying everywhere. I thought, 'This is pretty bad.' And then I started kind of walking through my mind, 'Is this for real?'"
In winning from the pole position, Keselowski dominated the Quaker State 400, leading 199 of a possible 267 laps. The victory was Keselowski's second of the season and his second overall at Kentucky.
"Welcome to the party," Keselowski said. "It's all good. I'm just glad we won. It's a lot better story when you win and get hurt."
