After seven hitless innings, Despaigne finally gave up a hit to Daniel Murphy.
Padres righty Odrisamer Despaigne was brilliant in San Diego's tilt with the Mets, holding New York hitless through seven innings. However, after throwing more than 100 pitches and struggling with his command in the seventh, Despaigne finally allowed a hit to Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy. He looked as if he was going to come out of the inning with the no-no intact after striking out Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Curtis Granderson to start the inning, but Murphy doubled to left-center and later scored on a single from David Wright.
The 27-year-old Despaigne signed with the Padres this season after defecting from Cuba just over a year ago. He made brief appearances in the Padres minor league system at the Double-A and Triple-A levels, posting a combined 6.03 ERA in 31⅓ innings. He was called up to San Diego following the shoulder soreness that landed Andrew Cashner on the disabled list in June.
So far this season, he has been better than expected, posting a 1.35 ERA through his first four major league starts and a 2-1 record. With Sunday's performance, his ERA dropped to 1.31 after giving up one run in 7⅔ innings pitched.
Catcher Yasmani Grandal produced the only offense for the Padres in the game with a solo homer to deep right-center field in the fourth inning. Despaigne struck out five, walked three and hit another batter before surrendering a hit to Murphy. Following Wright's RBI that tied the game at 1-1, Despaigne was relieved with two outs in the eighth after throwing 123 pitches.
