The NFL is expected to rule soon on the suspension of Aldon Smith, and the San Francisco 49ers are preparing for the suspension to be between six and eight games.

The San Francisco 49ers are "bracing" for a suspension of outside linebacker Aldon Smith of six to eight games, per Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Smith was sentenced to 12 days in jail and three days probation in July after pleading no contest to charges of felony weapons possession and misdemeanor drunken driving stemming from multiple arrests over the last year. Maiocco reported the 49ers did not know the pending NFL verdict on Smith, which was previously thought to be anywhere from four to six weeks.

Smith didn't play in the team's preseason opener on Thursday night against the Ravens in Baltimore, though he did join the team by game time. Smith was reportedly in New York earlier in the day meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

San Francisco drafted Smith with the seventh overall pick in 2011 and he has been one of the league's most dynamic defensive players in his three years with the 49ers, with 42 sacks in 43 career games.

In May, the 49ers exercised Smith's fifth-year option for 2015, paying him $9.754 million for next season.
