Blowouts were common on the opening day of the Little League World Series.
Blowouts were the theme of the first day of the Little League World Series. The 16-team, double-elimination round-robin kicked off on Thursday, and the first three games featured deficits of seven, 10, 10 and 13 runs, respectively.
Chicago's Jackie Robinson (West) topped Lynnwood's Lynnwood (Pacific) by a score of 12-2. The drubbing saw 10 runs cross the plate in the first three innings by the Midwesterners, making this one a blowout early one. Pierce Jones put on a display, belting three home runs and a triple in support of starter Joshua Houston, who spun four innings of shutout baseball, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven.
South Korea opened the day with a 10-3 victory over Czech Republic as starter Hae Chan Choi held the Czech Republic lineup hitless over two innings, striking out four. A five run fourth inning, keyed by a Ji Ho Park three run homer was more than enough to put South Korea in control.
A 13 run first inning turned the Puerto Rico vs. Australia matchup into a laugher that ended 16-3. Puerto Rico saw six batters total 12 RBI and seven runs on eight hits, including home runs from Abimael Torres and Oscar López. Joel Santos struck out five over two innings of work, while Australian pitcher Nicholas Riley couldn't get anyone out, giving up four runs before getting pulled.
In the fourth and final game on Thursday, Las Vegas drubbed North Dakota 12-2 behind a home run and four runs scored from Zach Hare. Austin Kryszczuk started on the mound for Las Vegas, and at the plate added three hits, including a double, and three runs scored.
