Dan Boyle's Rangers debut lasted only 14 minutes thanks to a broken hand. He will miss several weeks due to the injury.
It was a good news-bad news situation for the New York Rangers in their 2014-15 season opener.
The good news is that Rick Nash scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the final minute, to help left the Rangers to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. The bad news is defenseman Dan Boyle, their biggest acquisition over the summer, is going to miss the next four-to-six weeks after suffering a broken hand, the team announced after the game.
Boyle was injured in the second period when attempting to block a shot. After playing two shifts in the third period, he had to leave the game and was not able to return after logging 14 minutes of ice time.
After spending the past six seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Boyle signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Rangers in free agency to help fill the void that was left by Anton Stralman when he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning. No longer the dynamic 50-60 point defenseman he was in the prime of his career, Boyle still figured to be a useful power play asset for the Rangers on the point.
It still may end up happening for them, but now they're going to have to wait a few weeks.
