Schalke scored a late goal to edge Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0 on Friday evening. The win moves them closer to securing a spot in next season's Champions League.
Gladbach were on the attack first with a pair of corner kicks around the eighth minute. Joel Matip nearly turned the first attempt in his own goal. The second was headed just over the goal by Mike Hanke.
Atsuto Uchida was involved in a collision with Filip Daems a couple of minutes later. The Japanese international took a knee to the head. After being off the field for a while, Uchida returned. However, his return would be short lived, and he wouldn't return for the second half. Bild is reporting that Uchida suffered a concussion.
As the first half continued, Granit Xhaka sent a shot over the crossbar. On the other end of the field, Marc Andre ter Stegen was called into action to deny Michel Bastos from giving Schalke the lead.
Gladbach pressed forward looking for a goal in the second half, but they only managed to find the goal frame. Xhaka struck a hard shot off the crossbar, and Juan Arango's curling effort struck the post.
Schalke grabbed the late winner after a fantastic one-two between Julian Draxler and Raffael. After dropping the ball to Raffael, Draxler made an inch-perfect run to stay onside before receiving the return pass and coolly slotting past Ter Stege for the 1-0 advantage.
With 52 points, Schalke are six points ahead of fifth place Eintracht Frankfurt, who do have a game in hand now. They'll be unable to clinch the fourth and final Champions League place until next weekend. Gladbach remain one point out of the Europa League places. If Freiburg manage a win on Sunday, they'll put four points between themselves and Gladbach heading into the final two matches.
