Manchester United executive: Successor will need European experience

Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill has stated that Alex Ferguson's successor will need to have experience in European competitions, a suggestion which would appear to make the rumoured favourite David Moyes a less likely candidate.

Speaking to MUTV, Gill said that the new boss would require "requisite football experience in terms of domestic and European experience." That would seem to weaken Moyes' position, although the Everton boss does have experience in the Europa League. It may also rule out a move for Jurgen Klopp, with the Dortmund boss not having managed in England before.

Gill had previously suggested the same criteria for a potential replacement two years ago, although it does seem pertinent that he has chosen to bring it up again after Ferguson's retirement. It could be seen as an indication that José Mourinho is the likely replacement, although the suggestions remain that Moyes is the frontrunner.
