Free agent running back Tim Hightower is having preliminary talks with the Washington Redskins and New York Giants, according to a report from Mike Jones of The Washington Post on Thursday.

While Jones notes that neither teams' respective interest level is known for sure, the Giants appear likely to reach out to Hightower again in the near future.

Hightower was cut by Washington prior to the start of the 2012 regular season after lingering knee problems stemming from a surgically-repaired torn ACL kept him off the field. They got him from the Arizona Cardinals with the intent of making Hightower their main rusher. After starting five games for Washington in 2011, however, Hightower suffered the ACL injury. He had 321 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Redskins before getting sidelined.

The report also says that Hightower, 26, and his knee are now "feeling great" after a season out of the NFL.

Things are different in the Washington backfield since he was released. Alfred Morris exploded onto the scene in his rookie season in 2012, rushing for 1,613 yards and 13 touchdowns. They also have Roy Helu and Evan Royster and, after selecting two backs in this year's draft, the depth chart looks pretty crowded for the Redskins at running back.

The Giants, meanwhile, are in the midst of a transition of sorts at the position. Ahmad Bradshaw is a free agent, making Andre Brown and David Wilson their primary running backs right now.

In his last full season, 2010 with the Cardinals, Hightower rushed for 736 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught 21 passes for 136 yards in 16 games.
