The second most obvious managerial saga of the summer has come to a close. Evertonhave confirmed Roberto Martinez was their new manager. The former Wigan Athletic boss, who struggled to keep the Latics in the top flight until they eventually succumbed to relegation last season, has signed a four-year deal with his new club as they look to find an adequate replacement for Manchester United'sDavid Moyes.

The Toffees are taking a minor risk here. Martinez's teams might have looked sharp, but FA Cup triumph aside they've rarely been good, always ending up in a relegation scrap. But then again, he's never been able to build a team -- while Moyes might have had trouble recruiting players, Martinez's Wigan was constantly in need of rebuilding as his most talented players were poached away every season. Not scrambling to construct a new team every year will be a pleasant change for the 39-year-old.

Will he have a successful spell at Goodison Park? Barring actually getting relegated, which seems a hugely unlikely proposition despite the snickers, Martinez will probably be around for some time. And he's already proven his ability to win things on a budget -- which is more than Moyes ever has.
