San Francisco Giants outfielder Angel Pagan has a partial hamstring tear and might need to undergo surgery, the outfielder told Alex Pavlovic of the Mercury News.
Pagan will seek a second opinion from a specialist on his injured left hamstring. The outfielder has been on the disabled list since May 28 with the injury, and aggravated the leg during a rehab game on Thursday with the Single-A San Jose Giants.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that the expected recovery time from the arthroscopic surgery is six to eight weeks. Bochy discussed Pagan's options with the Associated Press, stating:
"We never look at surgery as the best option until we get all the information we can get from the doctors. It's frustrating when you do rehab and you're feeling great and then you re-aggravate it. Obviously, you're going to say, 'Well, the surgery you're probably going to be better off.' I can't say that right now."
The outfielder does not want to suffer another setback, telling Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle:
"The last thing I want is to trying another thing and go back to zero. If he advises me to get rid of the problem, that's what I'm going to do. There would be no setbacks for that. The problem would be gone."
Pagan hopes that the second opinion will provide him a quicker way to re-enter the lineup, but does not want to rush back a second time. The 31-year-old hit .262/.314/.374 in 204 plate appearances before heading to the DL.
