After using their first-round pick on someone who plays the same position, the Charlotte Bobcats will pass on tendering a qualifying offer to power forward Byron Mullens this offseason, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports.
By refusing to give Mullens the offer worth roughly $4 million, the Bobcats allow the 24-year-old to hit unrestricted free agency. Instead of retaining the right to match any offers made to the four-year pro, Charlotte will simply move on with No. 4 overall pick Cody Zeller as the primary power forward.
Seeing an expanded role in 2012-13, Mullens averaged 10.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 26.9 minutes per game. A weak post defender who mostly plays away from the basket, he shot just 32 percent on nearly four three-pointers per contest and 39 percent overall last season.
With Zeller and, hopefully, expanded roles on offense for Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and other young players, Mullens' quick-shooting ways were no longer a great fit. Still, being a young 7-footer who can occasionally pile up points, Mullens should be able to command some decent attention from the other 29 teams this summer.
