It's Friday which means we're all pretending to work for just a few more hours. While you finish up your real job, I'm gonna need your help on something at my job.

We need a nickname for Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis.

I asked that question on Twitter last night and got a bunch of responses but I also want to open it up here for possible nicknames. Leave all your nicknames in the comments and I'll round up some of the best of them to put into a poll sometime next week.
Possible nicknames via Twitter:

NFL Supplemental Draft Will Include TCU's Ed Wesley

The NFL's Supplemental Draft doesn't have anything on the real thing but it's nice to have some actual football news in the middle of July. Adam Caplan reports that the Supplemental Draft is expected to take place on July 12, though that's not confirmed yet.

We know of at least one name in the Supplemental Draft, though others have been rumored.

Wesley is leaving school for family reasons.

Caplan also reports that there could be as many as 10 players in the Supplemental Draft. A complete list could be out next week.

The Supplemental Draft is for those players who are qualified but did not enter April's draft. This is usually because their status with their school has somehow changed, whether that be for academic or disciplinary reasons. The Supplemental Draft is sort of a blind draft in that a team will select which round they will take the player in and, if they're the highest pick, they are awarded the player and lose the corresponding draft pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Jaws Breaks Down Chiefs QB Matt Cassel

Matt Cassel is the 22nd best quarterback in the league according to ESPN's Ron Jaworkski, who is counting down the NFL quarterbacks. Yesterday on ESPN Jaworski broke down Cassel, explaining what he does well and what he needs to work on.

Pretty interesting stuff. I transcribed the entire thing on NFL32 yesterday. Here's what Jaws said about Cassel, and then Merrill Hoge's quotes after that.
Ron Jaworski:

"My 22nd rated quarterback is Matt Cassel. Remember, two years ago Cassel led the Chiefs to the AFC West title. He was outstanding that year with 27 touchdowns and only 7 picks. His 2011 season was cut short by injury but his passing profile remained the same.

"Cassel is at his best in a managed offense that features run personnel, run formations and the play action pass game. Play action primarily gives the quarterback either-or to find reads. Cassel is very good in that system.

"This 42-yard completion maps it out perfectly. [Editor's Note: Week 4 vs. Vikings, Cassel to Breaston for 42 yards.] Steve Breaston was the only split wide receiver. He ran the deep dig that you just saw. So Cassel had to locate this safety after the run fake. The safety dropped down as part of the rotation to single high. Cassel read it and executed the play's design perfectly.

"Cassel throws the ball better to the inside -- digs, hooks and throws like that, better than he does to the outside. That's the way it is with quarterbacks with limited arm strength. In addition, the deep throws often come on first down. Play action is almost always featured as a six or seven man pass protection schemes.

"This was another safety read for Cassel coming off play action. [Editor's Note: Jonathan Baldwin's touchdown catch against the Chargers.) Again, the late rotation to single high. Does that deep safety play over the top and take out Jonathan Baldwin or sit low to defend Dwayne Bowe's hook route? He sat low, Cassel read it and went to the post. That's good stuff from Matt Cassel.

"You give Matt Cassel a solid run game, a good offensive line, room in the pocket to deliver the foobtall comfortably and he can be a very efficient NFL starter. That's what he is. He's a function of the team around him and he needs those pieces in place working effectively."

And here's what Merrill Hoge said to wrap it up:

"As long as his environment is perfect, and what I mean by that is there's a lot of people around him to support him, Matt Cassel's OK. Really, he's the prototypical quarterback in the NFL. 90 percent of them are Matt Cassels. You need a lot of people around you to be successful. As long as those are in place, he'll be OK. It wasn't just his injury. Everyone else around him was depleted, just ask my fantasy team."

What Do You Do At A 'Raider Nation Celebration'?

So this is why they get all upset when we say Chiefs Nation. There's actually a thing called Raider Nation Celebration.

Via our Raiders blog, Silver And Black Pride:

The Raiders have announced the date of the 2012 Raider Nation Celebration. The event will occur on August 12. No further details have been revealed as of yet such as the location of the event. As always, the event is completely free of charge and features all current Raider players as well as quite a few Raider Legends.

I think we can come up with a few ideas as to what goes on at this Raider Nation Celebration.

  • It's cheaper for the police to just pick them all up in one place
  • It's a sting
  • They're announcing the re-hiring of Tom Cable as head coach

So what is a Raider Nation Celebration?

Peyton Hillis Pulled A Truck Down The Street Today

While you were sitting in your office or doing whatever it is you do to put food on the table, Peyton Hillis was pulling a truck down a side street in Leawood, Kansas today.

Yep, I mean actually pulled the truck (via KC Star):

Atruckareyouserious_medium

This is already giving me ideas for a float in next year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Brookside.

The KC Star was on the scene and there's this "raw video" (TV term) from them. Yeah, it wouldn't be as hard once you got the truck moving but that's still damn hard to do. And imagine if you lived on that street. Be kinda weird, huh?

It's also not the first time Hillis has done something like this. See what the Google search "Peyton Hillis pulling truck" comes up with.

Erin Andrews Is Leaving ESPN

On Friday afternoon, Richard Deitsch of SI.com reported that Erin Andrews was being "aggressively" pursued by Fox Sports and the two sides had even met recently to discuss a role.

We're assuming ESPN saw that report because shortly after the story posted, ESPN PR tweeted out confirmation that Andrews is leaving.

Her contract was set to expire at the end of this month.

If she ends up agreeing to a deal with Fox Sports, it's expected to be a "major role" in their college football coverage, according to Deitsch.

Good evening everyone.

For the first time in three weeks I'm not gearing up to travel someplace. We'll be sticking around here this weekend which is nice because the lawn hasn't been mowed in almost two weeks. Ms. Primetime has reminded me I've got some work to do.

My victory of the week is simply surviving the worst six-week stretch as a football fan. Just not much going on in the league right now.

What's your VOTW?

2001 Emails Expose Penn State Officials On Jerry Sandusky

BELLEFONTE, PA - JUNE 22: Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky leaves the Centre County Courthouse in handcuffs after a jury found him guilty in his sex abuse trial on June 22, 2012 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. The jury found Sandusky guilty on 45 of 48 counts in the sexual abuse trial of the former Penn State assistant football coach, who was charged with sexual abuse of 10 boys over a 15-year period. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)

The scandal surrounding Penn State has taken another ugly turn after CNN's Anderson Cooper reported on emails exchanged between Penn State officials back in 2001, one of which appears to reference a meeting with Joe Paterno.

According to the report, former Penn State officials Tim Curley, Gary Schultz and Graham Spanier exchanged emails to determine how they would deal with allegations that had come up regarding Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted of 45 of 48 charges against him last week. The three came to the conclusion that confronting Sandusky would be more "humane" than taking the matter to the authorities.

The emails show they initially planned to tell the authorities about the allegations but opted not to after speaking with "Joe". One of the emails shown by CNN reads:

"After giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe yesterday, I am uncomfortable with what we agreed were the next steps. I am having trouble with going to everyone, but the person involved."

There have been similar reports regarding the cover-up but to see it in emails like that is alarming.

Chiefs Training Camp Weather: Cooling Down A Little

Via Weather.com

The weather at Kansas City Chiefs training camp has been hot but it could be a lot worse. Sunday's practice approached 100 degrees and you could tell. The media usually sits in a tent but sometimes I'll walk down to the field to get a better view of a drill and after about 10 minutes down there yesterday I was soaked with sweat.

Today's practice may not be as bad. It's cloudy around Kansas City -- still no rain for me, though! -- and the temperatures will be a little more bearable.

As you can see in the shot above, we're looking at the low 90s today.

I won't be at camp but plenty of others will. Anyone headed out there today?

Chiefs Training Camp: Dontari Poe Interview

Kansas City Chiefs rookie nose tackle Dontari Poe spoke to the media after Sunday's training camp practice. I didn't catch the whole thing but I Fescoe'd my way in there at the end.

[Definition of Fescoe'd: Somehow saddling your way front and center of every interview with a Chiefs player. The guy hustles.]

I transcribed the portion of the interview I heard and posted it below.
Q: Is it just Romeo coaching you or does [defensive line coach] Anthony Pleasant chime in as well?

Poe: "It's all of them. Trust me. Caoch Pleasant, just because he's specifically defensive line, but when coach Crennel comes to look at me, he gets on me."

Q: How much does it help that coach Pleasant has played for Romeo Crennel in the same system you're playing?

Poe: "A lot because he knows what to do, what's expected of coach Crennel. He gives us a lot of tidbits and small things."

Q: You seem to be staying humble here. Is that a big part of your mentality coming into training camp, to stay humble and stay working hard?

Poe: Pretty much staying myself. Kinda figured I'd be humble all my life so why change now? I'm just staying how I am.

Q: How much have you grown since that first rookie minicamp?

Poe: "A lot because there's a lot to learn. You grow smaller day by day, it's not going to be big leaps as you grow but as long as you get better each day, improving, that's all you can ask for."

Q: Away from the field, what do you like to do?

Poe: "In training camp, I like laying down. In general, I like video games, stuff like that. I like talking to my family on the phone, my mom. Other than that, I'm not doing too many strange things."

Q: You a big [Memphis] Grizzlies fan?

Poe: "Yeah, very big."

Q: Is it tough to be away from Memphis?

Poe: "Not really because I've been there so long. I love Memphis, love it to death, but it's nice to get away."

(Update: Looks like the Chiefs have the whole thing on video. Check it out here.)

Finally, Jason Babin Has Pooped

The Philadelphia Eagles training staff uses a thermometer to monitor a player's core temperature, which helps show them how a player is responding to the heat.

Eagles' Jason Babin ended up in a precarious position after using the thermometer this week.

As the Eagles trainer shows here, the player swallows a transmitter which tracks the internal temperature on a thermometer. The training staff needs this to see how hot a player is getting.

Babin swallowed his over the weekend and then on Saturday he strained his calf, which prompted the Eagles medical staff to call for an MRI. The problem is that the transmitter needs to be flushed from his system before receiving an MRI.

And the only way to flush it out of his system...

Yes, that's a #poopwatch hashtag. Babin tweeted that out on Sunday night and by early Monday morning he had soem good news to report -- he pooped!

Chiefs Training Camp: Branden Albert In, Brandon Siler Out

Last year the Kansas City Chiefs barely had a chance to get to know linebacker Brandon Siler before he went down with a season-ending Achilles' injury. He's been back in action up in St. Joe the past three days but he'll be sitting Monday's practice out.

Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel told reporters today that Siler will sit out with an ankle injury. That's all the official information we have.

Obviously, you hope this isn't an injury related to the Achilles' injury he suffered last year. Siler is expected to compete with Jovan Belcher at the inside linebacker job. Crennel has already stated that, as of now, Belcher is the starter. Siler will also contribute on special teams if he makes the team.

We're not out at camp today but we'll pass along any more information on Siler as it comes in.

On another note, 610 Sports' Josh Vernier notes that Branden Albert will be back in pads today. Here's the explanation behind Albert missing part of yesterday.

For the first time in the last four days I won't be spending my afternoon up driving up I-29 and watching Kansas City Chiefs training camp. But just because we won't be there doesn't mean there won't still be a lot of information coming out about practice.

This is your open thread for the practice, which starts at 3:20 p.m. We'll periodically update this with any observations coming out of camp. The comments are usually your best bet in terms of timely info from around the internet.

Tony Ugoh Retires

The Kansas City Chiefs signed offensive tackle Tony Ugoh on the first day of training camp and three days later Ugoh is gone. He has left the team and decided to retire.

No, really.

Wow. Josh also reports that Ugoh was at the walk through this morning. Didn't see that coming. U

goh wasn't in camp long enough for me to draw much of an impression of him but based on his past history I expected him to compete for the swing tackle job, as Josh Looney notes. That competition now comes down to rookie Donald Stephenson and second year player David Mims.

Also of note is that the Chiefs now have an open roster spot.

Tony Ugoh Retires From The NFL At Age 28

Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Tony Ugoh has decided to retire from the NFL. Ugoh was a 2007 second round pick by the Indianapolis Colts. He's only 28 years old yet decided to call it quits.

Ugoh was signed by the Chiefs last weekend as they started training camp. He was expected to compete for the Chiefs' third offensive tackle spot but that won't be happening now. Ugoh even attended the Chiefs walk-through on Monday morning and decided to retire before their practice later that afternoon.

Considering the Chiefs had a 2012 third round pick competing for the same position as him, Ugoh may have considered his chances of making the team as fairly slim.

Ugoh spent two seasons as the primary starter at left tackle blocking for Peyton Manning in Indianapolis. Ugoh also appeared in three games with the Giants last year.

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli On Dwayne Bowe, Times Two

Today was Scott Pioli day for KC area radio stations. Both 610 Sports and 810 WHB had the Kansas City Chiefs GM on today. Pioli talked with Steven St. John on the Border Patrol this morning and then the Big Show with Josh Vernier and Jay Binkley this afternoon.

There's one question you gotta ask if you interview the Chiefs GM right now -- where's Dwayne Bowe? Pioli, as expected, declined to discuss the specifics of the Bowe situation.

He was asked about Bowe by both stations and I transcribed his answer this morning on 810 and then this afternoon on 610. Check them both out below. He seems to do a good job of staying on point.
Jay Binkley (610 Sports): Dwayne Bowe. Is it not a question of if but when?

Pioli: "This is one of those questions, and I understand you asking. It has to come up. But out of respect to Dwayne, the process, the Chiefs and everybody involved, I just don't think it's healthy to talk about it, Jay, because I could say something seemingly innocuous about where things are or where I hope things to be and it be, not twisted by you, but just maybe taken the wrong way by someone. Everyone knows what the circumstances are, what the deadlines are, and those things tend to work themselves out. I don't ever want Dwayne or anyone else to think we're trying to leverage him, or he's trying to leverage us. Right way the way things are it's being handed professionally by both sides."

Steven St. John (810 WHB): I know I wanted to ask you about this, you tell me you only talk about the players that are here. But a lot of people are thinking about Dwayne Bowe and wondering when he's going to be in camp. For you, the general manager, when you've got a guy in this situation who hasn't signed the franchise tender, how do you handle that? Do you not worry about him until you hear from him? Do you try to make contact with the agent? What's the process like when a guy's not here that clearly is an important part of the football team?

Pioli: "It's one of those things, and I've said this time and time again. I understand and respect the questions, I understand the fans interest and curiosity and desire to want to know. One thing I feel very strongly about and want to remain consistent on is that when questions like this come out and you have a situation like this between the club and any player that it's not in the best interest to talk about the situation or the players or your expectations because regardless of what I say, I can say something that's positive that gets spun in the wrong way, intentionally or unintentionally, that looks like a leverage play with the player. The situation is what it is. It'll resolve itself at some point in time. Saying anything now as to what I feel or think -- do I think about it in the morning? At night? -- only lends to being unfair to the player and the club under circumstances like this."

Chiefs OC Brian Daboll Talks The QBs, RBs And O-Line

You can't miss Brian Daboll out at Kansas City Chiefs training camp. He's been wearing yellow Chiefs shirts (which are actually pretty cool) as well as a bucket hat so he kinda stands out. The other guys wearing the yellow are quarterbacks and, no offense to Daboll, but you're not gonna mistake him for a 6'4" quarterback.

The Chiefs new offensive coordinator spoke to reporters on Tuesday and I've plucked a few of the quotes. I think the truest statement in everything he said is this one: "That's something that we want to pride ourselves on is trying to be able to run the ball when you need to run the ball."

Make the jump for the Chiefs OC on the quarterbacks, running backs and offensive line. He also touched on the year two leap from Jon Baldwin, who had a "monster" practice on Monday.

On the quarterbacks:

"Well, they're working at it. I've been pleased with them in the spring and I've been pleased with them out here this summer. All four guys did better in the classroom as well, they have good camaraderie, they go out there and compete with each other, to try to get better."

On the running backs:

"When you have training camp, you see them break some runs and the defense does some good things too, and you kind of give and take back and forth. That's something that we want to pride ourselves on is trying to be able to run the ball when you need to run the ball. It takes everybody to do that, not just the running backs, the line, the quarterback getting stuff set right, the tight ends, the receivers, a collective effort. We're just trying to keep getting better at it."

On the offensive line:

"They are five guys that are gelling, I think it's a good eclectic balance. Steve Smith and the two coaches I work with that are in there with them early. They are a group that is pretty close, they do some things together, you see them over there bonding on the sideline, talking together. At the end of the day when you call plays you have to play cohesive football with all the other guys, but these guys set the tempo, so they have to be on the same page in football, so the more they work together, the better it will be."

On Jon Baldwin:

"Jon has been doing a good job. I think Nick Sirianni is doing a really good job with all the wideouts. They're taking to their coaching. I think that from a year one to a year two sometimes with any player historically that I've been around, you kind of make a little bit of a jump, and we're hoping to see that progress from Jon."
