For years as Florida's head coach, Steve Spurrier was the primary target of Georgia fans' hate and vitriol. Now that he's at South Carolina, Spurrier still competes against the Dawgs every year in the SEC East ... but he recently said the disdain held toward him from Athens has tapered off.
"You've got to realize, it's hard for Georgia to really get mad at South Carolina,'' Spurrier said. "They've got so many teams they're mad at or are mad at them.''
Spurrier is right about one thing: Georgia fans have strong hate for a few other teams and a few other schools really hate Georgia. With major rivalries against Auburn, Florida and Georgia Tech, it's understandable for Spurrier to think the Dawgs don't have enough emotion left over for him and the Gamecocks.
However, he appears to be mistaken. Just last week, SB Nation's Georgia blog, Dawg Sports, ranked the most loathsome coaches in the SEC. Look who came out on top:
1) Steve Spurrier: The Ole Ball Coach is the Ole Man River of the loathability rankings. Year after year he just keeps rolling along. Spurrier's loathability took a bit of a dip after his arrival at South Carolina. A humbled OBC is not terribly loathable after all. Even I have trouble kicking an old man while he's down. But with the Gamecocks' current win streak over the Bulldogs, I think it's safe to hate Stevie again.
And a quick search on Twitter shows that other Georgia fans and pundits agree:
Spurrier claims that UGA fans don't hate USC. Spurrier, listen up! On behalf of UGA fans, WE HATE YOU, and your team. ALOT! #SEEYOUSATURDAY

Steve Spurrier says he doesn't sense much hate from #UGA fans now that he's at South Carolina. I think he's being modest

Yeah but I bet #Georgia hates "Darth Visor" / Spurrier: Dawgs' hate not directed at S.C. http://t.co/n1IcuqLXhh?

Don't worry, Steve. It appears that the Dawgs haven't forgotten about you.
