Sabres lead after one period for first time this season

For the first time this season the Sabres will enter the second period of a game with the lead. Let's see what they do with it.

The Buffalo Sabres did something on Thursday night that they have yet to do in their previous 23 games this season. They finished the first period of a game ... with a lead.

Entering Thursday every other team in the league has had the lead after one period at least four times.

Tyler Myers' power-play goal with less than two minutes to play in the first period against the Philadelphia Flyers gave the Sabres the early lead, and they managed to hold on for the final 92 seconds of the period to hold their first lead of the season heading into the first intermission.

What's even more unbelievable is that the streak extends to the last five games of the 2012-13 as well.

Before Thursday, you have to go all the way back to April 14 to find the last time they finished a first period with the lead. That's a stretch of 28 games where they have been outscored 37-7 in the first period. That makes winning awfully difficult.

It was Myers' second goal of the season, and it helped finish off what might have been the best start Buffalo has had to a game this season.
