Fans will be in for a new security experience while entering ballparks next season.

Major League Baseball plans to recommend the use of metal detectors at all 30 ballparks next season, according to Jimmy Golen of The Associated Press.

Individual clubs will have a say in certain portions of the screening process, but the league is pushing for walk-through metal detectors at every venue, MLB security director John Skinner told Golen. The plan for increased security comes on the heels of a year in sports that included the bombings at the Boston Marathon. Situations like that play into the league's decision, Skinner said on Friday at the Ivy Sports Symposium at Harvard Law School:

"It's the reality, unfortunately, of this world. Ultimately, it will happen."

MLB hasn't formally announced any changes in its security procedures but plans to do so prior to the start of the 2014 campaign, league spokesman Michael Teevan said.
