Ballard missed most of last year with an ACL tear. He's now believed to have torn his Achilles tendon during the first days of Colts training camp.
Colts training camp started this week, and before it's really gotten underway, the team already has some bad news. Running back Vick Ballard was carted off the field today after sustaining a torn Achilles tendon, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

The injury was first believed to be an ankle injury, sustained during a non-contact portion of practice.

Folks, I don't have many details on Ballard yet. Looked to be an ankle injury that happened in non-contact drill. Stay tuned. #Colts

That's a tough break for Ballard, who has dealt with a knee injury in the past year. He tore his ACL in practice during Week 2 last season and missed the rest of the year. Now, he was supposed to return and give Indianapolis some running back depth, but this could put a dent in that plan before it even begins.
In his first season in Indianapolis, Ballard rushed for 814 yards on 211 carries. Without him, the Colts traded for Trent Richardson, who may need to take the bulk of the carries once again.
